Tabla — Harharpur & Banaras Gharana
“Alok Kumar Mishra is a young tabla player of the Harharpur and Banaras gharanas, trained in the guru-shishya tradition under Pt. Puran Maharaj, son of Padma Vibhushan Pt. Kishan Maharaj. A first-rank Tabla Visharad of Bhatkhande, he won first place in the U.P. Sangeet Natak Akademi's provincial tabla competition (2024).”
TablaAlok Kumar Mishra was born on 5 March 2004 in Harharpur village, Azamgarh, to a musical family — his father Sri Kamlesh Kumar Mishra is a tabla player and his mother Smt. Bina Mishra a sitarist. He began formal tabla training as a gandabandh disciple of Pt. Chandika Prasad Mishra (son of Pt. Shivnath Mishra 'Bulbul Maharaj'), and now studies in the guru-shishya parampara of the Banaras gharana under 'Taal Martand' Pt. Puran Maharaj, son of Padma Vibhushan Pt. Kishan Maharaj, guided there by his uncle Pt. Pankaj Mishra. He earned Sangeet Prabhakar from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad, stood first in Tabla Visharad (B.Mus) at Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth, Lucknow, and is currently completing a Bachelor of Performing Arts at Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya under Dr. Manoj Kumar Mishra. Alongside tabla he has a working knowledge of Hindustani vocal music, harmonium and dholak. He has performed solo and as an accompanist at national stages including Azamgarh Mahotsav, Harharpur Kajri Mahotsav, Deva Mahotsav, Gorakhpur Mahotsav and ITRHD (Delhi), and won first place (yuva varg) in the U.P. Sangeet Natak Akademi provincial tabla competition in 2024.
